The Tuscan seaside in winter: Christmas and New Year in the Maremma

In winter Castiglione della Pescaia is still a working town, with mild weather and the beaches to yourself. This is what to expect if you come to the Tuscan coast for Christmas, New Year or an off-season weekend.

Why the winter sea in the Maremma

In winter there are no umbrellas and no queues on the Maremma coast: just the sound of the waves, clean air and clear light that makes for sharp sunsets. Daytime temperatures are often around 12-15°C, and on sunny days you can have lunch outside. It's a good time to walk on the beach, cycle through the pine woods and see the Maremma without rushing.

Christmas in the Maremma

In December the Maremma villages light up with decorations, nativity scenes and markets. It is also the season of freshly pressed olive oil and traditional dishes: Maremma tortelli, wild boar and acquacotta soup, with a glass of Morellino di Scansano. With a fully equipped kitchen you can cook Christmas lunch at home, with the sea right outside the window.

New Year's Eve in Castiglione della Pescaia

For New Year's Eve you can book dinner at a restaurant in the centre or along the harbour canal and walk home, so nobody has to drive. New Year's Day starts with a walk along the Via Roma promenade and a coffee in the sun on the terrace.

Things to do nearby in winter

The Maremma Nature Park is open all year and good for winter walks. At the Diaccia Botrona reserve you can watch flamingos and migrating birds. About an hour and a quarter by car are the Saturnia hot springs, free to use, where you can bathe in warm water even in January.
